Brooklyn – 30 Measles Cases in The Past Week

New York City health officials reported 30 additional cases in the neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Borough Park in the past week. 29 additional measles cases were reported in Williamsburg, while one additional case was confirmed in Borough Park. In addition, health officials are reporting a travel-related case in Flushing, Queens.

As of February 26, 2019, there have been 121 confirmed cases of measles in Brooklyn and Queens since October. Most of these cases have involved members of the Orthodox Jewish community.

Although measles is rare in the United States because of high vaccination rates, it is still common in other parts of the world. Measles is common in some countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa and is occasionally brought into the Unites States by unvaccinated travelers who return with measles infection.

In addition, Israel is experiencing a measles outbreakthat in 2018 saw more than 3,000 case.

Also, in the County of Rockland in New York, one additional confirmed measles case was reported, bringing the total to 139 since Sept. 2018
